June is Cataract Awareness Month!

 Introduction:

How Do Cataracts Form?

In a healthy eye, our lenses are filled with proteins that line up to maintain perfect transparency. However, as time passes, these proteins may clump together, resulting in opacity and the formation of a cataract. While the rest of the eye may remain healthy, a cataract can obstruct some or all of the light from reaching the retina. It is the second most common cause of  treatable blindness.

What Are the Symptoms Of Cataracts?

Cataract can initially manifest subtly, making it challenging to discern their development. Gradually, one may begin to notice the following symptoms:

  • Faded or yellowed colours

  • Reduced night vision

  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare

  • Halo effect around lights

  • Dim, cloudy, or blurry vision

  • More frequent changes in glass prescription

  • Double vision in one eye

Risk Factors  for Cataract formation

While advancing age is the primary risk factor for cataract, several other factors can expedite their onset. These include diabetes, smoking, a family history of cataract, prolonged exposure to UV radiation, high blood pressure, previous eye inflammation or injury, prior eye surgery, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and prolonged use of medication.

The Good News: Cataracts Are Treatable

In the early stages, cataract symptoms can often be managed with glass prescriptions. However, as the condition progresses, glasses or contacts may no longer suffice. Fortunately, cataract surgery is a common and highly effective treatment option. This routine procedure, performed on each eye separately, is low-risk and can address not only cataract  but also other vision issues such as astigmatism.
